Ranking geo-engineering schemes

چکیده

P ropelling aerosols into the upper atmosphere or pumping carbon dioxide into the deep ocean are just two schemes that have been proposed to repair the Earth’s climate through geo-engineering1 (see Box 1). In the absence of adequate reductions in anthropogenic CO2 emissions, geo-engineering has been put forward as the only remaining option that might fix our rapidly changing climate2. Because such schemes are planetary in scale1, they are newsworthy and have long received widespread media attention2,3. Increasingly, the merits and drawbacks of at least testing the proposals are also prompting scientific debate4. Despite the surge in interest in old and new schemes5, at present no geo-engineering proposal has been tested or even subjected to preliminary trials. Although some proposals have been publicized for many years, little progress is evident6 in ranking geo-engineering schemes since an initial comprehensive effort7 15 years ago. Appraising the relative merits of geo-engineering designs for a purposeful perturbation of the Earth system is essential: funds to investigate such proposals in detail are limited, and not all schemes can be put in place if we are to monitor the Earth system’s response to each scheme with any confidence. The suggestions for geo-engineering are as diverse as they are controversial1,7, and ranking them is not straightforward.

The XLDB Group at GeoCLEF 2005

This paper describes our participation at GeoCLEF 2005. We detail the main software components of our Geo-IR system, its adaptation for GeoCLEF and the obtained results. The software architecture includes a geographic knowledge base, a text mining tool for geo-referencing documents, and a georanking component. Results show that geo-ranking is heavily dependent on the information in the knowledg...

Comparison of two integration schemes for a micropolar plasticity model

Micropolar plasticity provides the capability to carry out post-failure simulations of geo-structures due to microstructural considerations and embedded length scale in its formulation. An essential part of the numerical implementation of a micropolar plasticity model is the integration of the rate constitutive equations. Efficiency and robustness of the implementation hinge on the type of int...

Geographical Coordinates Estimation by Tag/Image Infor- mation

Location coordinates detection according to the visual/text information is widely used in this age, like geo-visual, geotagging and LGTA. We propose a two-level LDA scheme applied on Geo-tagging that can demonstrate relatively high accuracy compared with the tradition Standard Language Model (LM), Search Similarity (SS) and LM/SS hybrid. Our method is evaluated on a dataset from a task of Media...

Re-Ranking for Geo-Relevance With Non-Contextual Heuristics at GeoCLEF 2007

Geographic Information Retrieval (GIR) in an attempt to improve relevance by taking geographic information in textual documents into account. We describe out experiments carried out at the GeoCLEF 2007 evaluation [1] that investigate further the role of geo-filtering based re-ranking and query expansion with geographic terms. Our main findings are that manual query expansion with geo-terms is m...

International Data Exchange : The Future for Geo - engineering

The World Wide Web has revolutionised data access for all aspects of our daily lives. We are now able to find information quickly without leaving our desk. However, to allow full use of geo-engineering data from the web, as part of our professional activities, it is necessary for the data to be stored in a structured and standardised form. This will allow the World Wide Web to become an interna...
